About All India Council For Technical Education (AICTE)

The AICTE was comprised in 1945 as a recommended body in all substance connecting to technical education.  Albeit it had no constitutional powers, it played a very significant role in the development of technical education in the country.  It had four provincial committees with bureau at Chennai, Mumbai, Kanpur and Calcutta. All the new plan and proposals for starting new institutions/Programmes were accepted by the equivalent Regional Committee and subsequently examined by the Council.

In vision of the above, AICTE become a statutory body during an Act of Parliament 52, in 1987.  The Council, i.e. AICTE was recognized with a view to the suitable planning and co-ordinate development of the technical education system all the way through the country, the endorsement of qualitative improvement of such education in next of kin to planned quantitative expansion and the regulation and proper preservation of norms and standards in the technical education system for matters linked therewith.  Technical education was distinct as programmes of education, investigate and training in engineering, technology, architecture, town planning, management, pharmacy and applied arts and crafts and such additional programmes or areas as the Central Government may, in discussion with the Council, by notification in the official Gazette, declare.  The Act also laid down the powers, functions and arrangement of the AICTE.
